CHARLES BRITTAIN

Herbert Charles passed away on November
10, 1997 in his 91st year.
Born in England, he emigrated to Canada
and attended school in St. Boniface,
Man. He studied cornet and trumpet,
attend the Winnipeg School of Art, the
Ontario College of Art and the Reiman
School of Art in London. As a
musician, he played in dance orchestras at
the Royal York Hotel, Toronto, toured
Europe, and worked for three years in
England. Returning to Winnipeg in
1939, he led his own dance band for
several years, was employed as music
director at radio stations CKRC and CKY,
performed with the Winnipeg Symphony and
conducted the annual Hudson Bay Employees
Christmas Choir.
After retirement in 1973, he devoted more
time to painting, first in Spain and then
Penticton, B.C. He exhibited his
watercolours in several galleries and
served as president of the Penticton Art
Gallery. He resided in Victoria,
B.C. for the past 10 years.
Predeceased in 1994 by his beloved wife of
60 years, Lorraine (Warriner) a homemaker,
fashion model, and saxophonist.
Survived by a daughter, Diane Brittain
Dale of Victoria.
