By
Grade 6, I along with my best buddies Ted
Perich and Roy Nizalik, had in fact
become part of the school patrol. We
took great pride in the way we marched to
our stations and back, the way we took
down the flag (the Canadian Ensign, it was
called) and performed our duties in
general. In fact, we were so good
that in the spring of 1942 the school
patrol of Margaret Scott School was
declared the winner in a citywide
survey. The best in the city award
(complete with pictures and story in the
Winnipeg Free Press) went to our little
elementary school.
The
Manitoba Schools Orchestra (originally
named the Winnipeg Youth Orchestras) was
founded in 1923 to provide serious
professional instruction to
Manitoba's young musicians.
During its early years, the orchestra's
concert rehearsals were broadcast weekly
throughout the province on radio station
CKY until 1949. Each year, orchestra
members would also convene to broadcast
annual Easter mass concerts.

member of three Ukrainian choirs -
The Walter Bohonos Male Chorus, O.
Koshetz Choir, and the Hoosli
Ukrainian Male Chorus.
The audio recording above -

6th album by Hoosli, released in
December 1998, with Perich as one

The Continentals were
a four-piece vocal group active
through the 1960s. The
quartet performed at Ukrainian
festivals throughout Canada and
was a perennial favourite at many
early Dauphin Festival
celebrations. Weddings and
funerals were a regular part of
their engagements.
Canada’s National Ukrainian
Festival is held annually in
Dauphin, and was established in
1965.
It continues today, with 2025
marking is 60th anniversary.
